What screen-time reduction experiments actually show.

Some controlled interventions reduce measured phone use while the intervention is active. The harder questions are whether people keep the boundary, whether results persist, and whether findings from one intervention apply to another.

Bottom line: Reducing access can reduce screen time in the short term, but study results vary by intervention and often face adherence or follow-up limits. These studies do not prove that Monk Mode—or any specific blocker—will save a particular number of minutes or produce a mental-health outcome.

How this review was assembled

We selected controlled or randomized experiments that changed phone access, screen-time limits, app-session friction, or notification delivery and reported measured behavior. We prioritized primary research pages that expose the study methods and results. This is a focused evidence note, not a systematic review or medical recommendation.

The table separates the intervention from the conclusion. That distinction matters: blocking mobile internet for two weeks is not the same intervention as limiting one app, and a three-week finding is not evidence of a permanent result.

Selected controlled experiments

Measured use was substantially lower during the intervention than in the control group. The between-group screen-time difference persisted only into the first post-intervention week; the sample was young and the target was intensive.
2025 crossover experiment blocking mobile internet Participants used an app to block mobile internet on smartphones for two weeks while calls and texts remained available. Screen time fell during the intervention, alongside reported changes in sustained attention and well-being measures. Adherence was difficult: 119 of 467 people who committed met the preregistered compliance definition.
2026 randomized iPhone app trial, 70 participants A personalized full-screen reminder appeared after a user-defined time limit on the participant’s most problematic app. The intervention group reduced daily time on that target app by about 29 minutes during the three-week trial. The study did not find a significant reduction in problematic social-media use or an increase in self-efficacy; the trial was small and short.
2019 randomized field experiment, 237 participants Smartphone notifications were delivered normally, hourly, three times per day, or not at all. Three daily batches improved several self-reported outcomes compared with normal delivery. Turning notifications off entirely produced few of those benefits and increased anxiety and fear of missing out, showing that “more restriction” was not automatically better.

Three patterns worth carrying into practice

1. Active access changes can affect measured use

The studies that changed access or inserted friction reported behavioral differences during the intervention. That is stronger evidence than a dashboard alone showing the same behavior after it happens. It does not identify one universally best boundary.

2. Adherence is part of the intervention

A rule can be technically effective and still be difficult to keep. The mobile-internet experiment’s compliance numbers make this visible. A smaller boundary around one app or one predictable window may be more sustainable than an all-day restriction, but that is a practical inference—not a result directly tested across all these studies.

3. Short-term change and lasting change are different outcomes

The student screen-time trial found a large difference during its active phase, but the group difference largely disappeared after the first follow-up week. A credible screen-time claim therefore needs a time horizon. “Use fell during a three-week intervention” is not the same as “the habit changed permanently.”

What these studies do not prove

  • They do not prove that Monk Mode reproduces the effect of a research intervention.
  • They do not establish that every person should target the same number of minutes.
  • They do not show that more blocking always produces a better outcome.
  • They do not turn an app blocker into treatment for anxiety, depression, ADHD, addiction, or another health condition.
  • They do not establish a permanent benefit from a short experiment.

A conservative way to use the evidence

  1. Choose one observable behavior, such as opening a feed during a two-hour work window.
  2. Set a boundary that directly changes access during that situation.
  3. Keep necessary communication and safety paths available.
  4. Review actual behavior after a defined period rather than assuming the rule worked.
  5. Reduce, move, or remove the boundary if it creates more disruption than value.
